Second Graders celebrate the 100th day of school!


PRATTVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY SECOND GRADE

Second grade at PCA is an exciting time of growth and learning. It emphasizes the need to become more skilled at thinking and learning independently. Hands-on opportunities to learn about and experience the world around us – These can range from cultural field trips, such as plays and musicals or learning about our heritage at the Heritage Museum to field trips in natural surroundings, such as Hickory Hill Farms and Water Safety Week at the YMCA. Overall, the second grade year at PCA is filled with hands-on opportunities that are cooperative in nature and are student centered with an emphasis on biblical application to real life. Growth, independence, and an excitement for learning are emphasized. It is our goal to promote a desire for learning that students can carry with them throughout the educational process.

SECOND GRADE CURRICULUM



Bible: Bible class is taught using Christian Schools International curriculum God's Promises. Students will review creation to the exile from Jerusalem.  Jesus' life and teachings are studies, including the parables and the Lord's prayer, and a unit on Christian living based on the book of James. 



Reading/Language Arts/Spelling/Grammar:  Reading classes are taught using McGraw Hill Treasures curriculum.  Goals for the students are to develop a deep understanding in reading fluency and comprehension skills, spelling/vocabulary, and grammar by providing students with whole group and small group instruction and activities.  Students are involved in literacy centers and activities.  Trade and chapter books are used to supplement the curriculum. Opportunities and strategies to become better skilled writers throughout all areas of the curriculum. Print rich reading opportunities and strategies for becoming more skilled in phonics, fluency, and comprehension.


Environment:  Social Studies and Science classes are taught through integrated thematic units.  A focus in math, science, and social studies integrating hands-on opportunities to build higher order thinking skills through cooperative learning activities and interaction with peers



Math: Mathematics classes are taught using Pearson Envision Math curriculum.  Students are focused on a gaining a foundation with numbers, place value, reasoning, and problem solving.  Learning for understanding is enhanced by students' use of concrete objects and a variety of mathematical tools.

SECOND GRADE TEACHERS

  Brigitte McCawley

Brigitte McCawley is one of our second grade teachers.  Brigitte graduated from Faulkner State Communication College – A.S. in Secondary Education, University of Mobile – B.S. in Early childhood Education and University of Mobile – B. S. in Elementary Education. She is from Daphne, Alabama ( Baldwin County ). She is married with two children, and three grown step-children (who have two children). She loves being called ‘Me Me’! Brigitte enjoys writing poetry, working with children and youth, sporting activities (racing) with my family, hunting and fishing, and football (roll tide!)J What Brigitte likes about teaching at P.C.A. if the freedom to integrate God’s work and biblical principles into daily living and teaching. It is awesome to have the freedom and the calling go to help our youth grow spiritually and academically. Her favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”


  Nancy Dicks

Nancy is teaching one of our second grade classes. She earned Bachelors, Masters and Education Specialist Degrees in Elementary Education from Auburn University Montgomery. Nancy lives in Prattville with her husband and two children. Some of her hobbies are walking, reading and spending time with her family. What Nancy likes about teaching at P.C.A. is being constantly reminded that we are here to glorify God. Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight.”
