PRATTVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY KINDERGARTEN

The kindergarten program at PCA is a full day program designed to meet the academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of five to six year old students.  It is the goal of the kindergarten teachers to lay a firm foundation and love of reading by providing students ample opportunities to respond in numerous ways to quality children's literature and a multitude of different texts.  Students will be taught the foundational strategies and skills that will enable them to become independent and fluent readers during the primary years of elementary school.

KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

Bible: Students are introduced to the remarkable works of God on behalf of his people and stories of Jesus' life, death, and ascension.  Biblical principles are infused throughout all subjects all day.

Reading/Language Arts: The program is designed to immerse students in phonemic awareness, letter names, sound-letter associations, decoding and encoding skills, high frequency or sight words, comprehension strategies and vocabulary building activities.  The children will be taught how to express themselves in writing using their phonetic skills.  These goals are accomplished by using a whole group format for explicit teaching immediately followed by practicing the skills learned in literacy centers and small group teacher led activities that are based upon the children's needs and ability levels.

Environment:  This curriculum is theme based program that incorporates both science and social studies.  The program is integrated with reading and math so that all subjects are correlated with each other giving the children more continuity during the day and an opportunity for greater understanding.   The themes are listed in the course of study and includes themes such as living things, transportation, families, seasons, holidays, and historical figures among many others.  Field trips will be taken that relate to our environmental curriculum such as going to a farm while learning about farm animals and the zoo while learning about animals from the wild.  Books are used related to these themes as well as a weekly newspaper supplement designed for kindergarten children.  We use many songs, charts, chants, and finger plays in our teaching of these themes.  Most of the art projects also revolve around the themes used throughout the year.

Math: Kindergarteners are given a firm understanding of number sense through repeated experiences using concrete manipulative materials, i.e. hands-on materials.  The students will gain a firm foundations of numbers 0-20 that includes identifying the numbers, writing the numbers correctly and understanding one-to-one correspondence.  The children will practice making various patterns, discover shapes in their environment and practice calendar concepts on a daily basis.  Our math curriculum allows for much higher order thinking by providing such activities as the Daily Data which helps children to obtain information and interpret different tables and graphs to gain this information.  Children will be introduced to basic addition and subtraction, measurement using non-standard items of measurement, time to the hour, 3-D shapes and recognition and values of coins and the dollar bill.  These activities will not be done through paper and pencil worksheets, but will be achieved using hands-on materials and done in a concrete way.
