FIFTH GRADE CURRICULUM


Bible: Christian Schools International curriculum, Witnesses to the Gospel, is used in fifth grade.  Students learn to understand the various writings in the Bible.  Lessons examine the Gospels, the New Testament letters, and the book of Revelation.



Reading/Language Arts: Fifth grade students use the McMillian-McGraw Hill curriculum Treasures supplemented with other chapter books and novels.  Students will strengthen strategies in comprehension, writing and language, research, and oral/visual presentation with whole group and small group instruction and activities.  Students are involved in literacy centers and activities.  Classes are differentiated to meet the needs of all students.



Spelling: Students will use Evan-Moor spelling curriculum. 


Science: Fifth grade science is taught using McGraw Hill science curriculum.  Life, earth, and physical science are all taught.  Throughout the course, reading comprehension, writing skills, and research projects are all taught.  Students will also look at the scientific method.



Social Studies: Students will use Glencoe curriculum The American Republic to 1877.  This course starts back at early immigration to the United States and through the formation and growth of a nation.  Students will become familiar with major events in the period of the American Revolution, Westward Expansion, and the Civil War.



Math: Students will use Pearson's EnVision curriculum for math classes.  This curriculum is heavily based in problem solving.  Classes involve the practice of number sense, geometry, measurement, multiplication, division, problem solving, and rational numbers.  Students are taught to see math as authentic and meaningful.

Katherine Standstead

Ms. Sandstead is one of PCA's 5th grade teachers. She teaches math, science and history. Katharine graduated from University of South Alabama with a Bachelors of Elementary Education. She is originally from Gulf Breeze, FL and is engaged to be married. She has one "child", an English bulldog. Katharine enjoys cooking, reading, decorating and watching movies. Her favorite part of working at PCA is getting to be apart of raising a generation of children that chase after Christ! Her favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 5:12, "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
