2008 Math Competition Tie
for First Place
In the AISA
District V Math Competition, PCA tied for first place with a
total score of 161 points. However, Morgan Academy won the event
based on the tie-breaker, highest written exam total. This is
the third year running Morgan has won, while PCA has improved
tremendously, from 7th to 3rd to 1st (96 pts to last year’s 132
and this year’s 161.)
The math
competition has two parts. The first is a 50-question
multiple-choice exam, 90 minute time limit. The second portion
has students answer four questions, one at a time, each with a
90 second time limit. This second portion is very intense, less
than half the students get even one correct.
The PCA
team consisted of seniors Daniel Phillips, Abbey Greer, and
Andrew Bryson, and juniors Hunter Harris and Robert Bertram.
Daniel received the highest score of all competitors on the
written exam with 48 correct. This score is also the highest in
the past three years.
On the
cipher portion Daniel scored 11 of 12, tying for highest score.
Andrew had 3 and Robert scored 2. Congratulations to all the
participants on their excellent achievements.
Because of
Daniel’s high score he was invited to the AISA State
competition. In a much tougher test against the best students
from across Alabama, Daniel placed third out of 42 competitors.
In
addition, we need to commend the students who helped organize
and run the contest. Becky Pratt and Greg Jones did an
outstanding job registering the students and recording all the
data, a particularly difficult task with 10 concerned math
teachers constantly on the prowl to see how their teams are
faring. Tristan Vonada, Josh Powell, Savannah Hamilton, and
Colton Parsons ran the tests from students to graders to
recorders, setup refreshments, and escorted students to the
ciphering competition. (Refreshments were a particular challenge
this year as we did not have Haley Blackburn to assist.) While
these tasks may sound mundane, they are necessary parts to a
good contest and keep the competition flowing smoothly. The
promise of lunch at Cici’s Pizza may have helped motivate them
to excellence, and they were superb in their supporting roles.
We
congratulate all the competitors and sincerely thank the helpers
for another successful competition.
